SR 44 Bridge Replacement Flyer

The Florida Department of Transportation will begin construction of the new State Road (S.R.) 44 Bridge over the St. Johns River in Volusia and Lake Counties on Monday, July 13. This project will replace the existing S.R 44 bridge, also known as the Whitehair Bridge, with a high-level fixed span bridge.

The existing bridge will remain open to traffic while the new bridge is constructed south of the existing bridge. After construction is complete and traffic is switched over to the new bridge, the existing bridge will be removed.

This first phase of construction will focus on clearing and excavation and the traveling public will remain in the existing travel lanes.

This project also includes reconstructing the roadway bridge approaches, replacing the traffic signal at the S.R. 44 and County Road 42 intersection, relocating the access road to the Pier 44 Marina, and making access changes to Ed Stone Park, St. Johns Marina, Old New York Avenue, and Shady Oak. The contractor will also construct new stormwater ponds and implement safety enhancements, including bike lanes, lighting, and sidewalk improvements.
